What informs our thinking
The Medicine Wheel
A longer look at the thinking that sits underneath the ten days, and at how we work with it honestly.
A circle, four directions, and a way of looking at a human life as cyclical rather than linear. It is not the framework of the retreat and we barely use its language out loud. It sits underneath the design.
East
Beginning
First light, curiosity, the question that starts a chapter.
South
Heat
Doing, striving, energy, the outward push.
West
Maturity
Reflection, discernment, responsibility, self-authorship.
North
Integration
Perspective, stillness, what is carried forward and given back.
Our particular interest is the movement from South toward West: from heat, doing and outward becoming toward maturity, discernment, reflection and self-authorship. The place where a person stops asking to be told, and begins to choose.
A circle instead of a ladder
Modern life design tends to be drawn as a ladder: up, forward, more. The wheel proposes something else: that a life moves through seasons, that each direction has its own gifts and its own work, and that arriving somewhere is usually also leaving somewhere else.
Why the West
The move from South to West is the one many people arrive at without noticing. You have done the work, achieved things, built momentum. And a quieter question appears: what is actually mine to carry now? The West asks for discernment rather than more speed, and for responsibility rather than more options.
How it shows up
As a map for sequencing rather than a doctrine: where we begin, when we turn inward, when we reflect, when we celebrate. On the page and in the room we speak plainly instead. Nothing about it requires belief.
What we do not do
We do not present the wheel as a universal system, we do not teach it as though it belonged to us, and we do not use it as decoration. Where a practice comes from a tradition that is not ours, we say so.

Many Indigenous peoples hold their own distinct teachings, protocols and cultural contexts around the wheel; they are not interchangeable and they are not a self-help framework. We work with this as inspiration, name it as inspiration, and do not claim to represent any lineage or tradition.
